My first blog...

So after much inner debating and consideration I have decided to make a blog! I have come to this decision because of a few reasons...I like sharing ideas and such but mostly to share my future adventures this summer in El Salvador and Belize. I hope that it turns out amusing and enjoyable! I'm hoping to update this weekly and post fun pictures, too.

Stories/People/Experiences I´ve had on the bus

On the way home one of us flipped around when the bus started and totally squished a lady´s face against the wall with his huge backpack! Sad, but hilarious!
So often at bus stops people hop on to sell stuff, mostly food or snacks but sometimes other random things like razors, flashlights, or recipe books. Last week I was on the loudest bus I had ever been on. We looked out the window as we were coming to a stop and literally about two dozen people were RUNNING to the bus to get on to sell stuff! Everyone was yelling their various things...mani, mangos, platanos fritos, loroco, it was insane!!!!!
I talked with a guy who works with an electricity company and he had been electrocuted four times! Indirectly of course :)
This was probably the freakiest experience yet! I was sitting right in front of the back exit with the window open and my arm hanging out. A guy was trying to get off and he was hanging on the outside by a bar. When the bus slowed down he swung over right at my face! It was right when I looked over to and this guy was coming right toward me! I screamed, and he laughed, it was a good time.
So sometimes at night we have to wait for a while to get our bus. Some go close by our house but take a little bit of time to walk from the where we get off. One night it was raining, and a ton of buses passed by and ours hadn´t come yet. Then the five came, and all but about four of us got on it (I stayed waiting for the 5b) Right as everyone got on the bus the 5b showed up! It was so awesome to walk right past everyone getting on the right bus, we actually passed them later and didn´t get the best looks. Good things come to those who wait!
I stood on a paint can on the bus, it was a pretty amazing balancing act.
So on the buses there are these guys called cobradors who take the money and help people get on and stuff. Sometimes they´re way helpful and other times they´re way annoying because they´ll jump off at the stops and try to get you to take their bus. They always yell the same stuff really fast. So on the way home one our friend Dusty totally pretended to be a cobrador and was yelling out the door just like the natives! It was hilarious, the driver was totally confused, the women were all laughing, and the men just seemed irritated. I must say though, I would love to be one of them cobradors!
So we take this bus home every night after dinner and usually we dominate the bus as white people. It´s pretty fun, but the other day one of the other volunteers was talking to the driver and he said that all the drivers on the route totally know us. Every night they have a little meeting and they talk about who got to take us home because it´s so fun. We are pretty fun if I say so myself!
I bought these little chocolates from a vendor that walked through the bus (three for a quarter) and I totally did the Tsssst Tssst sound to get his attention. I´m basically a native now!
One time we were taking a new route to the orphanage we work at. We asked the driver if we were getting close the stop and he said ¨EEEEEEEEE, we´re almost there right now!¨He was pretty excited, but it turned out we weren´t close at all and he got another bus to take us there, which was still very nice :)
I usually keep good balance while standing on the bus, but one time the driver totally floored it and caught me completely off guard. I flew about four feet down the aisle and landed right on top of this guy. Fortunately he seemed pretty chill.
There were no seats left on a long bus ride and so we sat down in the middle aisle. Better than nothing I guess!
Some guy said I was very white and asked me to invite him to my wedding...it was a little awkward to say the least.
I bought a big hunk of pineapple from a vendor off the street and ate it on the bus. It was an amazing experience.
I was sitting on the right side by the window and the bus made a left turn. It didn't quite make it across and a huge diesel truck made a screeching halt right by me! It literally stopped about a foot away from the bus, it was a near death experience!
This didn't happen to me either, but my friends were on the bus and this creepy clown came on. He got up, spoke a little bit, and then got off. My friend took a picture of him and on the way out he muttered "F-ing Americanos!" Creepy!
It{s kind of weird, but when you walk backwards on a moving bus it feels really weird! I started running and flew into the back seat. Kind of stupid I know, but it was fun!
This didn{t exactly happen to me, but one of the other volunteers talked to a little girl in front of me. She was five and he asked her what her favorite subject was and she said Red Scissors! She was so cute!
We were on the bus in pouring rain and the windows got totally fogged up so we had no clue where we were. Eventually McCall asked a guy in her sweet innocent voice "Donde estamos?" It was hilarious, but eventually we did make it.
I fell asleep standing on the bus, crazy!
Probably the craziest experience yet. We were on the most insane bus drive, swinging back and forth, speeding through stoplights, bouncing up and down, it was out of control! I was standing right by the back door which happened to be broken and wide open, so I was holding on for my dear life because any loose grip I could have flown out of the bus! To top it all of Juliann told me to look at the driver and he was a tiny kid who couldn't be any older than 16. My life was in his hands!
My friend Esther and I went gallavanting through the city looking for fresh fruit. We asked around and got all of the right buses. On the bus they were playing awesome eighties music, and Esther even got a vendors attention by saying "Tsssss tsssss!" which is a cultural thing here, so she could buy some party peanuts :)
I shared a newspaper with a guy, he explained to me all about the past games of the world cup
We ran into the missionaries on the bus! We tried to convince them to sing a hymn but they said it was p-day so not necessary, lame!
I met a way nice guy who was my age and already a math college professor, he taught me the theme song for the world cup
We talked with the bus driver once in the front and he told us he worked every day for fourteen hours driving a bus. I have nothing to complain about!
I was standing next to a man who happened to be quite drunk, he was talking very incoherently, I think trying to describe the area. The only thing I understood was the word Neptuno´s which is the local bar, which made sense :)
In one day I had three different people on the bus tell me how my name is like the cartoon of the girl in the mountains, apparently they have a cartoon about that
A lady let me hold her baby that was so cute
I´ve met people from Guatemala, Mexico, and Ecuador
One person told me that his niece got a parasite in her brain from eating a bad pupusa, scary!
I met a guy who had the same birthday as me, his name was Julio too!
